Beautiful state park which was originally a CCC camp in the 1930s. Historic lodge building, contemporary golf course, hiking trails, picnic pavilions, lake swimming with a sandy beach, and playgrounds for kids. Rental cabins are available, as are rooms in the lodge itself. Don’t miss this gorgeous gem of a State Park.

Very nice lake and is very friendly. Saw a few guys fishing as we sat at the benches and enjoyed a nice lunch. Nice little get away park.

Artists retreat.
Nine painters in two well appointed cabins for a few days had all the inspiring scenery and convenience we had hoped for. Stopped in the excellent Nature Center and were given photo opportunities. Hiked the ridge to get mountain view. We had breakfasts and lunches at the cabins and enjoyed dining at Taris in town and at the park lodge.
There is no end to the picturesque spots we could find to set up for plein air practice.

It’s a lovely state park. Just eat someplace else. Our meal in the lodge restaraunt had to be one of the worst ever. The menu is pretty limited to begin with. The New York Strip steaks were less than a half inch thick, not properly seasoned, were not cooked to request of medium or medium rare, and the steak knives provided were not sufficient to cut them. Once they were cut they were oddly gelatinous yet impossible to chew. Served with mediocre mashed potatoes or French fries, the whole plate was underlaid by the sodden slightly rancid juice of a vegetable “medley”. One of us ordered the cream of mushroom soup and could not eat it, fearing the off taste would result in illness. Desserts were straight off the frozen foods truck. When after dinner coffee was requested one of us asked if it was fresh. The server said straight up, no, it’s not. We brewed it at 5 pm for opening. Great. At least the honesty was somewhat refreshing. The meal certainly wasn’t.

Relaxing place to stay
We have been visiting here for almost 50 years. We love the peaceful atmosphere and the view of the mountains and the golf course. Often we have seen deer crossing the golf course in the evening. We have played golf here in the past and enjoyed the layout. Also, have taken some hikes that were not too strenuous.

We love this park
18 hole golf course, 23 miles hiking trails, horseback riding, nature center, paddle boats, lake beach-I’ve been going to this park since I was a kid. My husband proposed here. Drive up to the overlook, it is breathtaking. West Virginia state parks are beautiful.
